GHANA FOR PEACE PROJECT; ELECTION 2008

INTRODUCTION

Ghana for PeaceĀ® is an initiative to discourage all forms of aggression and violent behaviour on the part of the youth and educate them to be able to make informed choices regarding the 2008 election.
The Federation of Youth Associations in Ghana (FEDYAG) is pioneering this Project with the support of the author and publishers of the Voters Guide.
1.1 The need for this project
As Ghanaians go to the polls on December 7, 2008, to elect a new crop of leaders into political office, the whole world is eager to know whether Ghana's evolving democracy will stand the test of time.
To some extent, Ghanaians have been able to suppress tribal and religious sentiments, but such issues remain a danger to our loosely integrated society. In addition, the recent oil discovery has intensified the obsession for political power. Regrettably, significant levels of violent protests were recorded during the primaries organised by political parties to elect their parliamentary candidates as well as the last voter registration exercise conducted by the Electoral Commission.
Although there are numerous signs of optimism, we are also deeply concerned about the dangers posed by the election to the peace and stability of our dear nation. Therefore, all warning signs must be taken seriously and all efforts must be made to avert the possibility of a failed election.

In doing so, the youth must be placed at the centre of affairs. This is because not only do we constitute the majority of voters, but also we are most capable of engaging in violent behaviour and worst affected in the event of a political conflict.
In view of the concerns raised, the Ghana for PeaceĀ® project is more imperative now than ever before.
1.2 Aims and objectives of this project
Based on the conviction that the best way to change a people or influence their thoughts and consequently, their actions is through education and inspiration, this Project aims at enlightening the youth of Ghana to be able to contribute effectively to democracy, peace and development.
Our objectives are as follows:
? To campaign against violence by instilling the virtues of democracy and peace among the youth
? To educate and inspire the youth to participate effectively in elections and be able to make informed choices.
6.0 CONCLUSION
A peaceful environment is a prerequisite for the triumph of commerce and industry and the development of society. In the absence of the politically stable environment we enjoy today, we will all suffer a fair share of the devastative consequences; damage to property and loss of lives and investments such as occurred recently in Kenya and Zimbabwe. Therefore, as residents of Ghana, foreigners and nationals alike, we are all jointly responsible for the perseverance of the peace and political stability needed to do business. In other words, we all have a duty to contribute to the maintenance peace and stability of this nation as long as we are residents.
FEDYAG is selflessly dedicated to this duty, but cannot do it alone. Your timely intervention will go a long way to make the dream of a successful peaceful election in Ghana, a reality.
We will acknowledge your contribution in our publications including the Voters Guide and on all our platforms.
We would sincerely appreciate it if you would respond to this proposal on time and make your contribution by close of September 2008. This will enable us stick to our work plan and be able to achieve desired results.
Your contributions could be financial or logistical. As you donate to this just course bear in mind that you are making the most important investment towards the future of your business and the nation as a whole.
